Hi! My name is River Sutaria, and I am an Expressive Writing Coach.

As an author, poet, and teaching artist, I aspire to use my coaching practice to help individuals unlock the healing power of storytelling and creativity.

What is Expressive Writing?

Expressive writing is not just about telling your story—it’s about connecting with the emotional heartbeat of your work. It’s a practice that invites you to explore the deeper layers behind your words: the grief, the anger, the resilience, the meaning. Unlike traditional editing—which only focuses on grammar, structure, and polish—expressive writing coaching helps you:

  • Make sense of what feels too big, painful, or tangled in your writing

  • Write without self-censorship, guilt, or shame

  • Discover and strengthen your voice as both a survivor and a writer

  • Develop emotional safety around your story before sharing it more widely

My coaching is collaborative and gentle—I’ll never push you to write about anything before you’re ready. Some sessions focus on guided writing exercises, while others provide detailed reflections to help you navigate blocks, triggers, or the emotional weight of your material.

HOW IT WORKS

I offer asynchronous expressive writing support for teens and adults who want a safe, creative outlet to process their experiences. This service is designed for those who may not have the time, comfort, or bandwidth for live coaching sessions, but still want thoughtful guidance and reflection.

  1. Prompts & Guidance — You’ll receive a set of curated writing prompts and guided exercises from me by email (usually 2–3 at a time, depending on your goals). These may include journaling questions, imagery-based freewrites, or structured exercises designed to help you explore identity, resilience, and healing.

  2. Your Writing Time — You complete the prompts on your own schedule. There’s no pressure to respond immediately; you can take a day, a week, or longer. The idea is to create space where your writing feels like a choice, not homework.

  3. Sharing Back — When you’re ready, you send me your writing by email (you can choose to share everything you write, or only selected parts that feel comfortable to you).

  4. My Feedback — I reply with personalized, compassionate feedback within a set timeframe (for example, 3–5 business days). My responses are not about grammar or line edits, but about witnessing your words. I’ll reflect on what I see in your writing, highlight themes and strengths, ask gentle questions, and offer suggestions for further exploration.

  5. Ongoing Support — Each cycle creates a rhythm: you write, share, and receive reflections. Over time, this builds a consistent practice where your voice is seen and nurtured. You’ll also receive occasional bonus prompts or resources to inspire your process.

This flexible model gives you the freedom to engage in expressive writing at your own pace, while still receiving deep, personalized feedback and encouragement. It’s especially suited for those who prefer privacy, need scheduling flexibility, or want to build a steady writing practice without the intensity of live sessions.
